Terminal's Christine Haebler (Bones of Crows) is coproducing the seafaring survival thriller with Iceland's Glassriver. Producer Christine Haebler ( Bones of Crows ) has signed on to coproduce the Icelandic seafaring survival drama Dark Ocean through her B.C.-based banner Terminal City Pictures. The film is a coproduction with Iceland’s Glassriver, with production slated for early 2027, a spokesperson for the project told Playback Daily . The budget is set at €4.5 million (about C$7.25 million), with 50% of the financing raised to date. Funding sources were not disclosed as of press time. Baldvin Z ( Life in a Fishbowl ) is attached to direct, and the script is written by Matthías Tryggvi Haraldsson. Glassriver’s Guðgeir Arngrímsson is producing. The film takes place on a fishing trawler in the North Atlantic, where a young deckhand on his first voyage comes face to face with the brutal forces of nature as he and his shipmates battle to draw their living from the sea. The cast includes a number of Icelandic actors, including actor and filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur ( Trapped ), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson ( Severance ), Thorsteinn Bachmann ( True Detective: Night Country ) and Thorvaldur Kristjansson ( The Darkness ). The project marks the latest international coproduction for Haebler, who has previously worked on such titles as the Dev Patel thriller Monkey Man via Screen Siren Pictures . “I’m honoured to partner with such talented filmmakers on bringing Dark Ocean to international audiences,” Haebler said in a statement. “The script captures both the intimacy and intensity of life at sea, while exploring universal themes of masculinity, resilience and survival in a way that feels urgent and deeply human.” Pictured L-R: Christine Haebler, Baldvin Z, Guðgeir Arngrímsson Photos courtesy of Glassriver

EXCLUSIVE: A second and final season of Black Sands is coming back to the Viaplay Streaming Service in the U.S. The first season of the dark Icelandic crime drama was well received, scoring numerous award noms at home and positive reviews in the English-language press. Season 2 will drop on the Nordic drama-skewed Viaplay Streaming Service on May 14. Two episodes of the eight-part series will launch each week. As well as the Season 2 launch news, we have a first-look at the trailer for the upcoming run and a teaser of what to expect. With Iceland’s titular black sands serving as the backdrop, the first season of the show followed Anita, a troubled police officer played by Aldis Amah Hamilton (The Valhalla Murders) who also co-writes the series. Hamilton’s character is forced back to her hometown where she begins tracking a serial killer who has been operating for years, but disguising the murders as accidents. “Maybe it’s time you knew the truth,” says the voiceover as a sweeping shot of the black sands opens the Season 2 trailer. The second season of the Glassriver-produced drama picks up the action fourteen months after the events of the first run. Set during a bleak Arctic winter, the mystery deepens with the strange death of an elderly woman and another shocking murder. As the investigation unfolds, the local town’s dark history is revealed. “It fills me with joy to see that Black Sands continues to intrigue,” said lead actor and co-writer Hamilton. “It was always our dream for this story to be two halves that would come together, so writing it felt very urgent, knowing this would be the grand finale. We hope this season will create space for important conversations regarding family, grief and inheritance… in its many shapes and forms.” Viaplay Content Distribution snagged the SVOD rights for the US, Germany, and the UK, where Season 1 went out on UKTV. All3Media International distributes the series, which is Icelandic-language with English subtitles. Season 2 is also launching in Germany, starting May 18. Joan Cruells, VP Partnership & Growth, International SVOD, Viaplay Group said: “Black Sands remains one of Iceland’s most acclaimed crime dramas, with its first season performing exceptionally well across Viaplay’s specialized streaming service in the U.S., UK and Germany. We’re thrilled to bring the gripping and addictive second season to subscribers this May.”
